Rescue workers continued on Saturday their effort to locate 12 people who went missing after a small wooden ship sank Friday in Ende waters in East Nusa Tenggara.

Head of the sea patrol and security at the local transportation agency Capt. Untung said 36 out of 48 people aboard the ship had been rescued as of Saturday morning. He added that two ships from the search and rescue agency and the water police were combing the Ende waters to find the missing passengers.

The ship, KM Karya Terang sank off the cape of Watumanuk on Flores island as it was traveling from Palue, a small island off the island's northern coast, to Maumere.

The cause of the accident remained, but the ship was sailing in heavy waves against a strong current.

“An investigation is being conducted by the sea transportation authorities,” Untung said as quoted by kompas.com. He added that many passengers ship operating in the area lacked safety equipment.
