Sailors cautioned as Krakatau rumbles increase

From The Jakarta Post

Sailors crossing the Sunda Strait are being cautioned as Mount Anak Krakatau continued its volcanic activity on Wednesday, which has been increasing for more than a week.

“Sailors need to be cautious and careful, especially now that the weather is becoming more unpredictable and there are high waves,” state-owned River, Lake and Ferry Crossing Company (PT ASDP) Merak branch chief Teja Suparna said Wednesday.

Fishermen and tourists have been advised not to travel within a 2 kilometer radius of Anak Krakatau, to avoid the possible expulsion of toxic gases and volcanic material.

Mount Anak Krakatau is located near Krakatau Island, between the islands of Sumatra and Java.

Krakatau’s activity has been increasing since Monday, reaching almost 100 eruptions per day.
