Cruising to adventure: doing it like 007

Paul Herrick -

Let’s face it fellow fellas, we have all fantasized about living a life like 007. We’re wired that way. His worldliness and self-confidence are objects of envy for any red-blooded, reasonably “testosteroned” male.

Well, that’s one of the neat things about cruising. From an analysis of all of his movies, over 80 percent of James’ AO’s (areas of operation) are accessible by cruise ship (we‘d probably have a problem dragging our wives to North Korea, Afghanistan, or Kazakhstan anyway). The especially good news for us here in South Florida is that about 20 percent of his AOs are in Florida, the Bahamas, and/or somewhere in the Caribbean (most wives will have no problem with those).

Of course, the real draw for us guys is not the “going there” so much as the “doing that”. That’s were the real confidence building comes in. We may not have a life and death fight atop the Golden Gate bridge (View To A Kill), but we can climb the almost equally impressive 450 foot high Sydney Harbor Bridge in Australia, or climb to the 1100 foot level of the Sky Tower in Auckland, New Zealand (the highest structure in the southern hemisphere). Cruise tourists do both of those everyday.

Remember Bond’s bungy jump off the dam in Golden Eye. If you really want to get a Bondian adrenalin rush, jump off the 650 foot level of the Sky Tower. One out every three people who pay the 200-plus New Zealand dollars to do it, walk to the edge—and “chicken out” (that “first step–” you know). They don‘t get their money back but they do get a t-shirt with a big chicken on it.
