UH Hilo to host UH Systemwide Marine Archaeology symposium

The University of Hawai`i at Hilo Marine Option Program hosts the 22nd Annual Symposium on Maritime Archaeology and History of Hawai‘i and the Pacific on Friday, February 18 through Monday, February 21. This year’s theme is “Reading Coastal Footprints: Ecology and Maritime Archaeology in the Pacific.”

The keynote speaker is Dr. Jack Frazier, a researcher with the National Zoological Park at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. His presentation, “Applying Archaeological Models to Ecology,” will take place February 18, 6:30-7:30 p.m., at Mokupapapa: Discovery Center for Hawai`i’s Remote Coral Reefs at 308 Kamehameha Avenue in downtown Hilo. It is free and open to the public.

Frazier is a specialist in sea turtle biology and conservation and is on the board of the International Sea Turtle Society. His presentation is a timely and informative discussion about human impacts to the environment over millennia.
