Cape Hatteras Lighthouse opens to climbers April 15

Erin James -

On Friday, April 15, visitors to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will have their first chance of the season to climb the 141-year-old structure. For the season debut, tickets will be free, the National Park Service announced today.

Until May 27, climbing hours will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Between May 27 and Sept. 5, hours will extend to 5:30 p.m. The lighthouse will remain open until Oct. 10 for those who want to climb its 268 steps.

Tickets are only sold on site and cost $7 for adults and $3.50 for senior citizens and children younger than 12.

Built in 1870, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has guided ships navigating one of the most treacherous sections of the East Coast. Threatened by beach erosion, the lighthouse was moved 2,900 feet to its current location in 1999 after years of study and debate.
