Fundraising efforts begin for GH Lighthouse Conservancy

Alex Doty -

Vink said the tavern, 10 Franklin Ave., will match the first $500 donated during its fundraiser, which is expected to last through the summer.

"We're going to put shelves up made from the old Tip-A-Few bar, and we're going to have carved boats that (U.S. Coast Guard retiree) T.J. Thompson carved, and some lighthouses and buoy tenders and some fish tugs," Vink said. "We're going to show everyone what went on in this port and we're going to have it on display up there."

Thompson said he is glad to be involved in the fundraiser since he has a history with working on lighthouses on the Great Lakes.

"I go way back with lighthouses when they were manned, and I know what happens to them," Thompson said.

Thompson said if people don't maintain the lighthouses, they will become a "ghetto on the waterfront."
