A south Tyneside landmark is getting ready to give its first visitors of the year a very warm welcome.
Souter Lighthouse, in Whitburn, will open its doors tomorrow, after a major refit over the winter saw a new boiler and heating system installed.
Bosses are also hoping this year will see a bumper crop of visitors – hopefully beating last year’s record-breaking 26,000.
Nick Dolan, National Trust property manager, said: “I’m pleased that this work has been done as we have struggled with an old and ailing boiler for years.”
The work, funded by National Trust membership contributions and donations, gives better heating control over the whole building, uses less energy, and reduces maintenance and repair costs.
Last year was only the second time in the lighthouse’s 140-year history that so many people passed through its doors.
Around the same number was achieved in 2005.
Visitor experience manager Simon Colvine says this is because of the variety of things on offer and friendly staff and volunteers at the lighthouse.
He said: “People love the outdoors, especially with the coastal walks on The Leas and the chance to enjoy some of the best homemade food around.
“Souter’s own beer was a big hit last year, and hopefully will be again.
“All the hands-on activities, and the chance to climb to the top of the tower, make for a great day out.
“Staff and volunteers have worked hard to get the place back together after all the building work, and everyone’s looking forward to sharing the lighthouse with visitors – in the warm.”
