Dozens of mortars found in sunken ship in Muara Baru

Hans David Tampubolon -

Tanjung Priok Port Police says dozens of mortar bombs have been found inside the ruins of a sunken ship in Muara Baru, north Jakarta.

The mortars were found on Thursday by Zainal Abidin, a 43-year-old scrap metal collector who had been salvaging metal from wrecks in the Muara Baru area.

Zainal took two mortars from the ship and the bomb squad had managed to secure the explosives.

Dozens of other mortars were then removed by teams from the Jakarta Police and bomb squad.

Tanjung Priok Port Police spokesman First Insp. Soeharto said there were 77 mortars inside the ship.

"We are still waiting for the results of tests by the bomb squad to find out if the mortars are still [explosive]," Soeharto said.
