3 lighthouses along Delaware Bay are being offered for free to educational organizations

NJ.com -

The federal government is trying to give away three lighthouses along the New Jersey banks of the Delaware Bay.

They're available for free schools, museums or other public entities that would use them for education, cultural or historic preservation or as part of parks.

The new owner would have to make them accessible to the public. The U.S. Coast Guard would continue to maintain the lights.

The Miah Maull Ship, John John Shoal and Brandywine Shoal lighthouses are accessible only by boat.

Over the years, the federal government has given away 60 lighthouse transfers.

Authorities tell the The Daily Journal in Vineland that if no takers for the three in New Jersey can be found, they will be auctioned off.
