Diver accidentally killed by raft propeller

A man was killed yesterday when he was struck in the head by a plastic raft's propeller blade while diving in waters off Pingtung County, according to a witness.

Han Chia-chou, the head of a whale conservation group in the southern county, said he was about to enter Hou Pi Hu port at around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon when he saw four individuals equipped with heavy diving gear emerge above the surface of the water.

Three plastic raft owners, meanwhile, were also navigating their rafts into port when one of the raft owners, surnamed Chen, shouted for help to Coast Guard officers after discovering the surface of the water had turned red with blood, according to Han.

Han said the officers immediately dived into the water to search for the victim, who was later pulled to the surface by a diving coach.
