Jordan - diving deep - for the love of Aqaba

MENAFN -

Six ex-servicemen from Australia, the US and the UK, who say they have fallen in love with the "beautiful reefs" of Aqaba, are planning to put the port city on the world map as a destination for diving enthusiasts.

The diving experts are gearing up to break the record for the deepest technical dive in the Gulf of Aqaba by diving to a depth of 166.6 metres (m).

By breaking the record, which currently stands at 144m, and inviting international diving magazines and other divers to attend the event, slated for late July, the six-man "166point6" team also seeks to promote Aqaba's natural beauty and raise awareness on the need to clean up and preserve its coral reefs.

The group has also teamed up with Project Aware and the Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan (JREDS) to promote coral reef awareness locally and internationally."We also want to give technical diving a public profile in Jordan," Australian Rohan Cadzow, who is going to be the team's target diver, told The Jordan Times in a recent interview.

His team mate, British Duncan Baillie, noted that there are only two diving centres in Aqaba providing training on technical diving.

"While the dive has its risks, it will show that Jordan offers a diving experience that rivals Egypt's Sharm El Sheikh as a destination," he told The Jordan Times.

Another safety diver on board, American Jake Link, wants to share his experience of Aqaba's beauty with the world through this dive.

"When I first came to Aqaba, I was surprised to see that it has some of the most beautiful reefs in the world. I had no idea there was such beauty there," he said.

Link voiced hope that the event will be "putting out the word for all divers" to come to Aqaba and help clean the reef and raise awareness on the "wonderful ecosystem" there.
