It's been a deadly weekend at two Northwest Ohio quarries.
On Saturday at the Gilboa Quarry in Gilboa, a 54-year-old Cincinnati diver died.
On Sunday, a 52-year-old Canton diver perished at the White Star Quarry in Gibsonburg.
Both deaths remain under investigation.
"Scuba diving is the closest thing to being in space. It's a matter of taking your time and being properly trained," says Jeff Davis, owner of Aqua Hut in Toledo and a certified dive instructor.
Davis says there are three ways diving accidents can be prevented.
Proper training is important.
You also need to stay active, making 15 to 30 dives a year.
But Davis emphasizes you need to know and understand your equipment.
"The equipment is normally not a problem. The problem is the person doesn't know how to deal with it because he's never used that equipment before."
He adds that it takes three to five 2-hour courses for a diver to get certified.
The problem is that some students think they can do anything, he says.
"It's all about safety. Everybody learns at a different level. Some people will learn real fast. They'll go through the skills like second nature. Other people will be challenged by the skills."
