The commercial and leisure marine sectors are being asked to help support the UK based Mary Rose Trust in a big Christmas raffle to raise £10K for the charity.
Fiona Harvey, Mary Rose Trust appeals fundraiser said: “By supporting the Big Raffle we hope to raise £10,000 which would contribute to the conservation of the ship and the thousands of artefacts found and retrieved from the Solent”.
Buying or selling raffle tickets will help to conserve this piece of important maritime history for future generations.
The new Mary Rose Museum, due to open late 2012 in Portsmouth will, for the first time since her sinking, re-unite the ship and her contents, fully conserved and presented in a time capsule of Tudor life at sea.
The Mary Rose, launched in 1511 by Henry VIII, and sunk by a French fleet in 1545, is the only sixteenth century warship on display anywhere in the world.
Its rediscovery and salvage were seminal events in British maritime history. Raffle prizes include a 14 night cruise to Portugal and the Canaries’ on the Boudicca cruise ship courtesy of Fred Olsen or a two day whale watching voyage donated by Brittany Ferries.
