Schoolboy, 15, died trying to ‘break his own record’ for holding his breath underwater

Daily Mail -

A sporty schoolboy died in a tragic swimming pool accident after attempting to break his own record for how long he could stay underwater.

Reiss Morgan passed out as he tried to hold his breath underwater at Clearview Health and Racquet Club in Brentwood, Essex.

Staff at the swimming pool fought desperately to resuscitate the 15-year-old from South Ockendon, Essex, but their efforts were in vain and Reiss was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

His devastated parents Mark and Leigh Morgan have had to wait nearly three years to discover why their only child died on July 30, 2009.

The loving family have since raised more than £10,000 for a local hospice in honour of their much-loved son - who had celebrated his 15th birthday just a fortnight before the incident.

An inquest has finally been held in Chelmsford, Essex and found there were no suspicious circumstances or third party involvement in Reiss's tragic death.

Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray apologised to Reiss' parents for the extraordinary delay in hearing their son's case - blaming an investigation by Brentwood Council into the swimming pool death.

She confirmed the swimming pool will not face charges in relation to what she described as a 'tragic accident'.
