Family sues for negligence in Wes Skiles' fatal diving accident

Cindy Swirko -

The family of the late High Springs cave diver, explorer and filmmaker Wes Skiles has filed a lawsuit against dive equipment companies alleging their negligence caused his death while exploring a reef off Boynton Beach.

Skiles died on July 21, 2010, while using a breathing system that recycles exhaled gases rather than conventional scuba tanks filled with oxygen.

"We just feel like there need to be answers as to why an experienced, professional diver like my brother would die in 60 feet of water," said Jim Skiles, Wes Skiles' brother.

"We think the legal system will help find out what the true cause of death was."

The suit was filed by Skiles' wife, Terri, as representative of his estate.

Skiles is also survived by two children. Named in the suit are Dive Rite, which designed and manufactured the "closed circuit rebreather" that Skiles was using; Juergensen Marine, which manufactured the electronics used as a computer for the rebreather; and Analytical Industries, which makes oxygen sensors for rebreathers.
