Spine-chilling Adventures with Spooky Seas at the Vancouver Aquarium

By Samantha Kent

Beware of skulls, bones and spine-chilling adventures with Spooky Seas at the Vancouver Aquarium running October 16 – 31. Our spook-tacular Halloween programs feature fun, family-friendly activities for all ages.

You don’t want to miss Spooky Seas! From hauntingly decorated galleries to true tales of shipwrecks off the B.C. coast complete with real shipwreck treasures in our Treasures of the B.C. Coast Gallery, there are lots of frighteningly fun things to do and only a limited time to enjoy:

· Get Spooked by the Skulls,Teeth and Creeps of the Deep Exhibit – explore the depths of our own spooky seas – peer inside the jaw of a great white shark, dare to get up close to the skull of a killer whale and learn why you should be afraid, very, very afraid…if you’re a crab! Predator prey relationships show you what’s really scary for marine life in our oceans.

· “The Curse of Skull Rock” 4D Experience – see the award-winning spook-tastic new film that will sail you away on a tale of pirates in search of cursed treasure, complete with windstorms, mist and the rumbling of rough seas ahead.

· Treasure Hunt – Join us for a spine-chilling adventure in search of lucky treasure and a chance to win a rare VIP Octopus Encounter for two.

· Pirates in the Gallery - On weekends, hold onto your treasure and beware of the roving band of pirates with swashbuckling tales of shipwrecks off the B.C. Coast.

A truly frightening Halloween tale? One of the biggest threats in our oceans is not the predators swimming about, but the extraordinary amount of human trash posing as food and ocean life in our waters. More than 70,000 plastic bags were collected from Canadian shorelines this past fall during the Aquarium’s Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Taking up to 20 years to decompose, plastic bags are often confused as jellyfish (food) for turtles and other marine life, which can kill these vulnerable animals.

Halloween programs at the Aquarium connect scary facts like this to inspiring ways you can support marine conservation in your daily life. Enjoy these spook-tacular activities and learn how you can make our oceans a little less scary !
