Port Orange river monster caught, mystery solved

The monster fish, which has ruined dozens of lightweight fishing rigs under the Port Orange Bridge on the Dunlawton Causeway for more than a month, has been caught and identified.

Daytona Beach's Chris Higbee, 28, caught a goliath grouper estimated at more than 75 pounds early Wednesday morning under the river span.

Since the goliath is a protected species, Higbee could not remove it from the water.

Friends snapped a photo of the goliath's head as proof of the catch. Ocala's Jason Smith was Higbee's witness.

On Wednesday afternoon, Donald's Bait & Tackle, located on Bird Island, awarded Higbee the $100 bounty and a T-shirt for solving the Halifax River monster mystery.

“I've been fishing under this bridge for many years,” Higbee said in a telephone interview.

“I heard the rumors of the Port Orange monster and decided, ‘Let me see what I can do.'
