Five great Scottish island trips

From news.stv.tv

As Skye is honoured in a prestigious holiday poll, we look at other beautiful destinations that deserve a visit.

It came as no surprise to most Scots that the Isle of Skye trumped European hotspots to land a place in a top holiday poll.

Everyone has their favourite, of course, whether that's due to a sentimental trip with loved-ones or an action-packed adventure holiday.

So we decided to highlight five Scottish island treasures - in no particular order - that we think really make the grade.

1: Isle of Jura (Inner Hebrides)
Jura is one of the wildest places in Scotland, with the population of red deer outnumbering people by 30:1. It has no direct link to the mainland, but all the effort required to get there is rewarded with some fantastic walking, fishing and a glimpse of the Corryvreckan Whirlpool, just off the coast.

2: Hoy (Orkney Islands)
Hoy is the second largest of the Orkney islands, and is far more hilly than its neighbours. This treasure trove is best known for its World War Two heritage, fascinating Neolithic history and the wonderful Old Man of Hoy, an enormous rock stack sticking out into the sea.

3: Isle of Barra (Outer Hebrides)
Barra is only eight miles long and four miles wide, but that makes it the perfect place for walking. It's tranquil, has beautiful white sandy beaches and a variety of lochs which are rich in brown and sea trout. Pay a visit to Barra the next time you need to get away from it all.
