Pirate studies key to learning treasure

Warwick Courier -

Scuba divers gave children at a Warwick school an insight into the world of diving for sunken treasure last week.

Members of Warwick-based ScoobaBoosta told pupils at Emscote Infant School about the danger and excitement of diving and showed them the equipment they would use to swim down onto a wrecked pirate ship and the techniques of underwater archaeology.

Deputy headteacher John Queralt explained studying pirates meant children could learn about history, maps, navigation, classic stories and even science.

In a second activity later in the week the children ‘sailed’ model pirate ships in the Grand Union canal using a leaf blower.

Mr Queralt said: “It’s a really exciting subject the children can get motivated about. It works far better than anything we have tried before.”
