Tornado swamps boat, kills 7 in Kalimantan

The Jakarta Post -

Seven people were killed when waves driven by a tornado swamped a speedboat in South Kalimantan.

The skies were reportedly clear when the speedboat left Sungai Buluh in Hulu Sungai Tengah regency with 21 passengers, just 15 minutes before the tornado struck.

“Eyewitnesses said suddenly the tornado caused 2-meter-high waves,” Ahmad Fatoni, a local officer, said Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.

The 21 passengers, all from Keliling Benteng village, were relatives of the wife of a local village head who were going to a family wedding in Rantau Bujur, he said.

Rescuers reportedly found bodies as far as 15 meters from the site of the wrecked boat. Fourteen survivors were taken to two nearby hospitals.
