Scuba diving in and around Chicago is a world-class experience that many area residents don't even realize exists.
Our World Underwater, which claims honors as the Midwest's largest public dive convention, was developed to change that mindset and provide everyone — from seasoned divers to the diving curious — with a look at how much fun can be had under the waves.Organizers expect nearly 15,000 people to pack the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont this weekend for the 42nd show's lineup of workshops, children's programming, film festivals, awards presentations and the latest dive innovations from more than 240 vendors and manufacturers."This is the auto show for diving, and there's something for everyone," said professional diver Jimmy Sommer, of Goose's Scuba Shack in Dyer, Ind.Sommer has been a vendor and attendee for more than 20 years. One of the show's notable guests is Oscar-winning producer James Cameron. "Diving is one of the most accessible sports," said Patrick Hammer, the show's operator, adding that diving draws in everyone from children to the elderly and the handicapped."It's a true family activity that can involve travel, exploration and science," he said.Extensive children's attractions include a 40-foot humpback whale exhibit, 25-foot great white shark exhibit, marine biology seminar, art activities, videos and the opportunity to suit up in kid-sized scuba and snorkeling gear. The show is the only opportunity many certified divers will have to conduct hands-on comparisons of the latest gear from virtually every major manufacturer. Additionally, representatives from various countries will be on site to provide information on dive-travel adventures.Posted via http://batavia08.posterous.com batavia08's posterous
