Maritime Journal -
Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown has announced the procurement of a new ro-ro hybrid ferry, designed by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd, this week at a maritime conference in Linlithgow.
The new multi-million pound hybrid ferry, currently under development, will put Scotland at the vanguard of pioneering low carbon maritime technology, said Mr Brown.
The design incorporates a low-carbon hybrid system that combines traditional diesel power with electric battery power meaning reductions in fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions.Designed to operate on many of the short crossing routes around the Clyde and Hebrides, the ferry will accommodate 150 passengers, 23 cars or 2 HGVs.CMAL has been working on the project following the recent Small Ferries Project, which saw them partnering with the Department for Regional Development Northern Ireland and the Department of Community Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs Ireland, in order to examine ideas for a common design and procurement strategy for small ferries.Posted via http://batavia08.posterous.com batavia08's posterous
