The Navy will pay $8.5 million to settle claims over the coral reef damage caused by the 2009 grounding of a warship off Honolulu International Airport.
The settlement with the state of Hawaii was announced Friday. The USS Port Royal, a 9,600-ton guided missile destroyer, damaged thousands of square yards of coral that was hundreds of years old when it ran aground on Feb. 5, 2009, and was freed four days later.The Navy had already spent $6.5 million restoring the reef and $40 million repairing the ship, bringing the total cost of the mishap to $55 million.Posted via http://batavia08.posterous.com batavia08's posterous
