Russians 'nearly sink' while crossing Atlantic on inflatable vessel

RIA Novosti -

A Russian expedition crossing the Indian and Atlantic oceans on an inflatable trimaran in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record nearly sank when their multi-hulled vessel was damaged.

Grigory Filimonov, who runs the expedition's website, said a hole in the trimaran's main hull appeared due to a shark attack, though the exact cause is unknown.

A similar attack took place on March 4, when two hulls were damaged by sharks. The vessel was able to continue its 14,000-km journey after minor repairs.

The crew had to constantly pump air into the damaged hull to stay afloat and continue the journey.

"That night we sailed like this: pumped air for ten minutes, then a five-minute break. We had some serious action because we were pumping in pitch black darkness without any stars in the sky. But we decided not to just drift because of repairs, and thanks to that we covered a record distance of 80 miles in 12 hours," Filimonov quoted a crew member, Yevgeny Kovalevsky, as saying.

The vessel is currently heading to Brazil and is to reach its coast in seven or eight days.
