Whilst doing maintenance works near Zeebrugge, Belgium, the Pearl River has sucked a 250kg bomb on 24th May 2011, 3.30AM. After warning the coast guard, it was decided the bomb should be taken into the port for inspection as the sea state was too rough for authorities to aboard.
The Pearl River sailed towards the port of Zeebrugge after a safety zone was installed around the ship. Arrived behind the breakwaters the inspection took place and the bomb revealed to be from the Second World War, measuring 1m long and 40cm wide, weighing 250kg. As there was no detonation device, there was no risk.
The bomb was taken off the ship to the mine destruction service in Poelkapelle.
