Lottery millions to save WW2 submarine

BFBS.com -

The campaign to stop a Second World War submarine rusting away is to receive a share of £11 million of heritage lottery funding.

HMS Alliance is the last surviving `A’ class submarine in the UK. More than three million pounds is being made available to repair the bow and stern and fix extensive corrosion on its surface.

The vessel is on display at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire, and is one of only two listed submarines. It is part of the "core collection" on the historic ships register and is also a memorial to submariners lost on active duty.

In addition to the repair works, the project aims to provide new activities which bring the submarine's history alive for visitors. Recently a team of engineers went aboard to experience what life was like for the submariners who served on her.
