'Honeymoon killer' may be innocent, says dive expert

An Australian expert who examined the fatal dive by American Tina Watson while honeymooning on the Great Barrier Reef has questioned allegations that she was murdered by her husband.

Gabe Watson, who was imprisoned in Australia after pleading guilty to manslaughter, is to stand trial for his former wife's murder in the United States next week.

Michael McFadyen, a Sydney-based sports diver who publishes one of Australia's most popular websites for divers, is to appear as a defense witness for Watson. Mr McFadyen has logged more than 3000 dives.

He believes the mystery of Tina's death can be answered by examining her respiration rate, and the lack of proper supervision during the fatal dive.

"She may have been using a tank with insufficient endurance for such a dive, but that didn't kill her," he told The Saturday Age.

"She seems to have panicked and over-breathed."

Mr McFadyen says his argument can be tested by calculating Tina's air volumes based on the smallest air cylinder she could have used.

If the tank was larger, then the results are simply conservative.
