Bob Simpson of Nanaimo is one of the first Canadians to take the treasure-hunting game of geocaching to new depths.
During the past five years, Simpson has logged 1,800 geocache finds, which he says is no real feat as others have well over tens of thousands of finds to their name.
However, after a scuba diving vacation in Bonaire in January, where Simpson specifically dove to find three separate caches, he decided to sink a few in local waters.
With success from his first four underwater caches, Simpson hopes he will be able to create four more by July, when thousands of geocachers will descend on Vancouver Island for the Island Spirit 2012 Geocaching Mega-Event in the Cowichan Valley.
The underwater caches are not only the first of their kind in Canada, but they will also attract geocachers to Nanaimo and divers to the best scuba diving locations on Vancouver Island.
Fellow diver, Shirley White, owner of Nanaimo Dive Outfitters, quickly became an underwater geocache junkie and is eager to help Simpson sink more caches before summer.
Geocaching is a free, hightech treasure-hunting game played throughout the world by adventure-seekers equipped with global positioning system devices.
The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, or geocaches, outdoors and then share the experiences online.
