Fishermen in Aceh rescue Burmese asylum seekers

The Jakarta Post -

Fishermen in Kreung Raya, Aceh, rescued 129 Burmese asylum seekers whose boat became stranded in the Malacca strait following an engine malfunction.

Two of the asylum seekers underwent treatment for extreme dehydration at the local health care center.

The remaining Burmese were in a weak condition due to lack of food.

One of the rescued, Nur Alam, said they were stranded at sea for 25 days.

“We were heading for Australia to seek safety,” he said, as reported by kompas.com.

The 129 Burmese are currently being housed in several buildings at Malahayati Port where their boat was brought to dock by the fishermen.

Local residents are also providing food and aid to the Burmese.
